Viva Viaduct!
Or rather, 'viva' to their plan about it. Peter Steinbrueck, the Vice-Chair of the city council's Transportation Committee, said "The replacement of the viaduct is a fantastic opportunity to begin the creation of a 21st century transportation system. The car can no longer rule all our decisions. There’s got to be a better way." At least those nutcases I just ranted about are losing.

I'm so excited! Bravi, bravi, bravissimi to the council for their long-sighted vision! Cars are very fun, cool, and convenient objects. But they're simply not scalable and not practical as a long term, dominant transit option for a place with hard and narrow physical constrants like this. Especially in a dense city with a centralized commercial area, which is well-suited for mass transit (it actually makes little sense *not* to have good mass transit here). It will be interesting to see how the details of the plan flesh out. I hope the council continues to make responsible decisions which are practical for now through the long term.
Ps. Your rant below is fantastic and funny :) Just what I would have wanted to say, could I mobilize my fingers after shocked indignation!
